The importance of the present study lies in its focus on a significant modern Arabic dictionary, namely al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (The Great Dictionary), which was compiled by a group of leading lexicographers at the Academy of the Arabic Language in Cairo. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology and aims to identify the primary objectives of this dictionary, analyze its distinctive methodological features, and present the linguistic entries it followed in collecting and presenting its lexical material, as well as to clarify the unique characteristics of these entries. The study reaches important findings regarding how both native and non-native speakers of Arabic can benefit from this dictionary—whether in reading and consulting it, tracing the meanings of vocabulary items, or utilizing its methodological and lexicographical features in the compilation of similar dictionaries in other languages.
