Voluntary Prayer Laylat al-Qadr Legal View KH Abdul Hamid TarjumanAbstract
This study discusses the view of KH Abdul Hamid regarding the ruling on the prayer of Laylat al-Qadr in the book Tarjuman (around 1800–1900 CE). This work is a foundational text in both theology and fiqh, although it contains more extensive discussions on fiqh rulings. It covers topics ranging from purification, prayer, fasting, zakat, inheritance, muamalat, hajj, and marriage, to general rulings on what is lawful and unlawful. Some members of the community still practise the prayer of Laylat al-Qadr. Through this prayer, it is hoped that one may encounter the blessed night of Laylat al-Qadr, which occurs once a year. The objective of this study is to identify KH Abdul Hamid’s view on the prayer of Laylat al-Qadr. To achieve this, the researcher employs a qualitative method, namely library research. The study finds that the practice of the Laylat al-Qadr prayer is based on a hadith that cannot be used as evidence because it is mawdu‘ (fabricated). Therefore, this prayer should not be practised, except by replacing it with general voluntary prayers (salat sunat mutlak) or other prayers recognised by the Shariah.
