The Pakatan Harapan (PH) government introduced an Islamic concept termed Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin after assuming power following the 14th General Election. This concept was reflected in several approaches taken by the Minister of Religious Affairs, such as engaging cordially with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community, halting enforcement raids related to khalwat or immoral activities in hotels and other premises, and the absence of initiatives to strengthen Islamic legislation through the court system, among others. In this regard, the concept has been questioned by various parties, as it appears to remain an idea that is not yet fully developed or firmly grounded. It has even been criticised as an agenda that weakens the credibility of Islam as the religion of the Federation. Therefore, this article seeks to examine the true meaning of the concept of Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin and the extent to which it may conflict with the new approaches introduced by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government. It is hoped that this article will contribute to all stakeholders, particularly the PH government, by encouraging a closer evaluation and refinement of any weaknesses, and thereby dispelling doubts that have arisen within society.
