Destructive environmental issues require both offensive and defensive approaches. Education is one of the offensive approaches that aligns well with societal norms and ways of life. It also serves as a primary medium in realizing the Sustainable Development (SD) agenda, leading to the emergence of several initiatives under this framework such as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005–2014 (DESD), and Environmental Education (EE). Both educational instruments and the sustainable development agenda have received serious attention at the global, regional, and national levels, particularly from an Islamic perspective. Therefore, this article examines how the context of Islamic Education at the school level functions as an agent in manifesting sustainable development in Malaysia. This preliminary review reveals that Islamic Education plays several roles in nurturing rabbani individuals who can drive the sustainable development agenda forward. The article proposes that the integration of Islamic Education with environmental education in schools requires a clear system of integrating knowledge and skills, without unconsciously creating a dichotomy of knowledge.
